Variable vs. Fixed Size Disk

I understand that whenever a variable sized disk needs MORE space, it will slow down, however, my question is, Assuming I have unused space in my current partition (for instance, copy a 1 gig file, delete it then empty the trash. At this point I should have at least 1 gig unused) is there ANY performance hit by using Variable vs. Fixed?


(I have the NEED FOR SPEED)

Yes, I also would liek to understand any REAL speed tests that have been done.

Is variable as fast as fixed or is there a performance hit and more imporantly.

I am likely to notice the difference int he real world?
