Video resolution running Linux under Windows

I really hope that someone can help me -- running Ubuntu under Windows is like Christmas to me. I have this wonderful Acer 22" monitor that was a steal and goes up to 1680 by 1050. I did what the docs said and edited my xorg.conf file to include that resolution, hoping to get the full screen experience, and now there are several higher resolution options available under linux, but the max is 1280x800.

So, what is the trick to get Ubuntu under Windows running Parallels Workstation to see all of my video goodness? Any pointers appreciated.

Bonus points if someone could just point me to a resource that could help me figure out how to get Ubuntu to run properly as a native OS on my Acer AST180-ED380M...

The virtual video hardware is where your problem will be, and there's nothing that can be done about that, other than waiting for parallels to upgrade.

Does it have to be Ubuntu?

I use openSUSE, and I'm very happy with it. The current version is 10.2, and can be downloaded from www.opensuse.org. If you do go to openSUSE, then one good thing to do is, go to Yast, software, and installation source. Select a http server with the name packman.iu-bremen.de, and a directory of suse/10.2. This will get a few things, most significantly, it will get the non open source video players and codecs, which will allow playing of all media files.
