Vista VM won't install on FAT partition?

Partypeople,

I tried to create a new (Windows Vista) VM using the latest Parallels build and have the VM placed on a FAT formatted partition. I can start the setup of Vista and it copies up to 99%. Then (probably the moment it hits 100%) setup cancels with an error about a file being corrupt or missing and it can not continue.

When placing the VM on the OS X partition, the setup runs fine.

Now, I don't know if Parallels can or can not use a FAT to store the VM but at least it should detect it a bit sooner I reckon so that we don't have to waste our time waiting for the files to be copied up to 99% (this behaviour was constant, I tried 4 times).

Since you were using the VM on a FAT partition, did you tell Parallels to split the virtual disk into 2 GB parts? If not, that would be why you are having this problem; FAT only supports files up to 4 GB in size and therefore your virtual disk file cannot be more than 4 GB in size unless it is split into parts.

No I didn't actually because I wasn't aware that that had to be done but I do remember reading something like that before. hmmm.

Anyway, that's all fair enough, we know the limitations of FAT.

However, it would still be nice of Parallels to do a check before installing so stupid users like me don't have to wait 20 minutes before they find out it's not going to work.
