VM can't see network

Parallels 4.0 (3540) on unibody MPB, 10.5.5. VM is XPSP2.

The VM is using shared networking. The Mac can see the machines on my network (I can ping them, etc.), but the VM can't. The VM can get to the Internet, i.e. Firefox works from within the VM, it just can't see any of the other machines on the network I'm plugged into. So, e.g., I can't log into any of our SQL Servers from the VM.

I've read the docs on shared, and it sounds like this should work. An ipconfig within the VM shows a 10.x.x.x IP address (the Mac has a 192.168.x.x address on the network), but I assume that's artificial.

Why would the VM be able to see the Internet but not the other machines on the network? Are there more details on networking setup than are in the user guide?

I changed to Bridged networking and now the VM can see the other machines. So, I'm working, but I'm still curious as to why Shared doesn't work, if anyone knows. Thanks.
 
Connection to other Windows machines are bidirectional, in order to see other machines, you need to contact network administrator to provide you ports necessary for communication in Windows environment , and you need to configure those ports mapping at Parallels Desktop - Preferences - Network

The thing is that in Sharing Networking you can connect to other machines (e.g. to connect to machine named storage, it is possible to type in Windows Explorer \\storage and connect), but it is not possible to browse network.

This is due to the nature of SharedNetworking. It acts somehow similar to firewall or network gateway..
 
No, I couldn't connect. I couldn't ping, I couldn't connect (i.e. via a net use \\server or through trying to map the server direct in Explorer), it couldn't see the machine in any shape or form. I could have lived without browsing (in fact I never browse my network), but I couldn't live without connecting.

Then, the issue is interesting..

Could you please try to do some tests?
1) Choose some machine that it is working now and try to ping it from Mac-side to determine it's ip-address
2) Try to connect to the machine from Windows using it's ip-address doing \\ip_addr (e.g. if ip is 10.10.10.10, then \\10.10.10.10)

Another test, is to try to use full machine name.. e.g. in my Parallels network, full machine name for storage is storage.parallels.com
