What exactly is the function of the .hdd file

I recently cloned a VM and then upgrade the Windows image in that cloned partition. I have been testing with it before officially moving from the old VM to the new. I noticed both VM configurations point to the same .hdd file, which surprised me. I thought this file was the hard drive image and with two VMs having different content, it wasn't clear to me how they could point to the same file. What gives? What about this am I misunderstanding?
 
The filenames might be equal, but is the path EXACTLY the same?

But yes, it's also possible for two different VMs to point to the same .hdd.
