WHAT IS THE CORRECT WAY TO SHUTDOWN A VM THAT IS HUNG AND NOT RESPONDING??

I have had nothing but problems with the 12.1.xx Parallels Desktop for Mac release. This morning I attempted to start my Windows XP VM and it just hung. Nothing was responding..just the spinning color wheel of death when hovering the mouse over the desktop. It was not possible to access the Windows Taskmaster to kill whatever process was the problem. The Windows Start button was not responding. Starting and restarting the VM did not release the "HANG". Windows could not be forced to QUIT. Completely closing the Parallels app did nothing to resolve the issue. Closing and restarting Parallels just returned the VM to its HUNG state.

I followed the "help" directions on the Parallels webpage to STOP the VM. This finally forced the VM to quit whateverthehell it was doing. Unfortunately, this also resulted in the corruption of my Outlook Email database. NOT happy! Yes I have backups. But that is not the point.

What is the approved way to shutdown a hung VM that will NOT result in data corruption???

You cannot shutdown if the whole Windows XP virtual machine is frozen the only option you have is to stop the virtual machine but which might corrupt the virtual machine or some application which caused the Windows to froze.
 
Well, that's a shame. The 12.1 version of Parallels running on Sierra crashes more often than my "real" Windows box. Kind of defeats the purpose of running Parallels, doesn't it?? I should note that prior to upgrading from Mt Lion and Parallels8 that my XP VM did not crash even once in about 3 YEARS.

So my solution would be to make a copy of the VM prior to running any program? In the off chance the app should crash or hang in a bad way, I have a ready backup?

All sarcasm aside, the only times that the Parallels 12.1 XP VM "hung", is when I left apps open or in the task bar..paused the VM..then restarted the VM. This was NEVER an issue with MtLion/Parallels8. I just upgraded to Parallels12.2 so we'll see if that fixes the issue.

Hard Disk setting: 64GB expanding disk
Memory: 1GB. <-(per Hardware tab > CPU & Memory)

The Mac has 16GB.RAM ( 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 )
 
So I've ditched Outlook Express and downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird. It imported all the OE .dbx format files without a hitch. Time will tell if it was OE, but so far so good.
