Which Windows Version?

Hi,

I am new to a Mac, so have a stupid question....

I have a PC running Windows 7 and would like to move some of my accounting software over to my new Mac. I have installed Parallels 7 and now not sure what to do regarding the Windows install.

Do I need to purchase and download a new version of Windows 7? If so, do I have to select the full version? (didn't realise how expensive it is!)

Apologies if this has been covered in previous threads, but could really do with some advice/help.

Hello Ardvark. According to Microsoft EULA, one license can be installed only into one machine:

"The software is licensed on a per copy per computer basis. A computer is a physical hardware system with an internal storage device capable of running the software. A hardware partition or blade is considered to be a separate computer."

You can install Win.7 inside VM in Parallels Desktop 7 and activate it with the same license you used on PC on condition that you completly uninstall Windows 7 from PC.

You don't address OEM versions of Windows licenses, which is the case for most PCs that are sold with Windows preinstalled. OEM licenses are non-transferable and locked in to a specific hardware configuration.

Indeed, due to the nature of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) versions of Windows that may be tied to the original PC system, there may be files, drivers, configurations, programs and license agreements that are unique to the respective PC manufacturers. Moving a system with this type of operating system may pose some technical and licensing issues.

Check with your PC manufacturer, Microsoft and review the OEM Windows Migration document on the Parallels website under Support before trying to complete this type of move.

The linked Quick Start Guide is 5 years old.
Please provide users with links to the most up to date documentation, (found here: http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/technical-documentation/ ).
If there's information on old and outdated documents that should be present in more recent ones, please arrange internally for this information to be updated.

Ok guys you covered the OEM Windows case.

In other case (your installation is not OEM) you can migrate the whole WIndows installation from your PC to Mac with the help of Parallels - just click 'create new' and choose Migrate option. You can try migration over the network or via external harddrive. Please refer to documentation before you actually start migration
