Will Parallels work in Snow Leopard?

I would like to upgrade my Mac OS X Leopard to Snow Leopard as soon as it will be available. Will my Parallels work there?
 
forgot to mention that I'm replying about Parallels Desktop 4.0 and 32-bit Snow Leopard.

32 bit vs. 64 bit

I think you meant to say Parallels 4.0 will run as a 32 bit app. I assume it will be updated to 64 bit in the future? All 10.6 is 64 bit but will run apps as 32 bit as needed.
 
I'm sorry to confuse you about this, it is rather technical detail.

64bit is a special mode of SnowLeopard, that might be turned on by special actions. Actually, I may not talk at all about this, since Snow Leopard is under Apple's active construction and nobody knows how final version will look like.

So, although I really want to inform about good features, we should wait oficial information from both Parallels and Apple.
 
Nice to know that Parallels 4 will work with Snow Leopard 32-bit as a start. Can you tell us more on the roadmap of Parallels Desktop? E.g.
1. Will Parallels 4 be updated to work with Snow Leopard 64-bit?
2. Will this be a new release or just a free update?
3. Or will there be a new release of Parallels all together with new features?
 
yeah, these are good question.
I hope it will be free update because I've just purchased the Parallels 4 and don't want to purchase other after few weeks when Snow Leopard will be released.
 
Apple announce the August 28th release of Snow Leopard today. Elric, can you confirm that Paralells 4.0 will run with Snow Leopard installed. I've got to admit I am bit confused over the whole 32 bit vs 64 bit discussion.
 
I am confused too... I thought Snow Leopard was a 64bit OS and no way to choose 32bit operation... Parallels please clarify this issue...

any comment on Parallels 3 in Snow Leopard?

I would assume not, given the complex nature of the software and how it interacts wit the OS. But a simple yes or no to clarify would be appreciated.
 
I've done some digging on the Web and I'd like to share it with you :)

I believe Parallels 4.0 build 3844 will work provided that Snow Leopard is booted up with 32-bit kernel, this is I believe the default boot-up parameter for Mac OS X, you can also achieve this by pressing 3 and 2 keys during boot up. The reason behind that is the build 3844 doesn't load 64-bit kernel extensions correctly which are essential for 64-bit Snow Leopard kernel. Therefore, if you boot up Snow Leopard with 64-bit kernel, your Parallels 4.0 build 3844 will not work because 64-bit kernel requires 64-bit Parallels kernel extensions.

Parallels please correct me if I am wrong.

Could you not run SL in 64bit mode, then select Parallels to run in 32 bit mode? I a bot of noob so stringing togther the info I've gleaned from the interweb thingy.

Regardless of this maybe one of you could help me. If I do a clean install of SL (as opposed to upgrade) can I just use the old disk image I downloaded to install Parallels again and re-enter my registration key I was emailed when I purchased the product? If so, can I then restore my VMs from Tie machine and these will run ok? Will Windows require re-authentication?

Confirmed

Yep, Parallels won't run VMs when you've booted in 64bit kernel mode under Snow Leopard:

"Unable to load the Parallels driver. Restart your mac and try again."


However, the latest beta of VMWare Fusion has experimental support for 64bit kernel, as well as Aero support in Vista/Windows 7.

Any word when we'll get both these features in Parallels?

If you are running the latest version of 4.0 (afaik so far it is 3844) this should work (btw, upgrade of Mac OS to SnowLeopard should work also!)

If TimeMachine will correctly restore the VM, this should work.
 
This article doesn't address the unclarity behind Parallels 4.0 build 3844's operation when and if Snow Leopard is booted up with 64-bit kernel.
