win XP crashed, shdocvw.dll failure

hello
I have an auth. version of win xp installed as a virtual disk via parallels on mac osx.

this happened:
-win system crashed
-reboot a faultproofmode
-some sort of analysis (?) ran automatically for about 10 minutes befor attempting to start up win xp
-win xp won't start again
-blue screen appears with a shdocvw.dll failure
-reboot keeps running in a loop between blue screen and win startup.

mac runs fine, seems to be no probems with paralells itself.
anyone have an idea of
1. what happened?
2. can it be fixed?
3. if not, how to reinstall win xp?
