Windows 7 BOOTCFG Corruption Message

Hey Guys,

I've been using Windows 7 through Bootcamp for a while and also using Parallels to run the Bootcamp Partition Virtually.

Recently I have discovered that Star Wars The Old Republic runs BETTER through Parallels than what it does Natively due to issues with the ATI Catalyst drivers.

To this end I have changed the Parallels Machine to use 1Gb of Video RAM and 4Gb of System RAM. Unfortunately when I have done this I get the following error when Launching the Virtual Machine:

"BOOTMGR image is corrupt. The system cannot boot."

The guest operating system is Windows 7 64bit SP1

Now here's the catch, I have modified the Bootcamp partition using the following instructions:

This enables AHCI mode inside Bootcamp so the SSD drive I have in the system can utilise the full transfer rate.

The Bootcamp partition boots fine on it's own I just can't get it running under Parallels with more than 2gb of allocated memory.

So if anyone has any experience or similar issues i'd love to hear if you had it resolved.

According to the instructions, the changes to the MBR are not supported by the Apple EFI, specially revealing of this is the sleep issue, Parallels emulated BIOS most probably doesn't support this modified MBR either.

My conclusion, either Parallels decides to support this MBR modification in their code or someone at OCZ releases a MBR patch that supports Parallels, if not you simply won't be able to boot this partition in Parallels.

I realised I didn't explain it correctly however. I can boot the Virtual Machine using bootcamp, just not when using 4gb of allocated RAM. It does work find with 2Gb but anything OVER that causes the error message.

I have tried restoring the backup of the MBR I made however i still cannot boot the VM using 4Gb of RAM.

I'm going to say it still has something to do with the modifications I made and will just deal with it.

Hi. I just did the exact same thing. I can configure the tweaked Boot Camp MBR VM up to 2GB of RAM. Over and I get the Bootmgr error message.

Has anyone found a solution?

I have also an SSD and I had to enable AHCI to get it to work with proper performance for the SQL Server. Now that parallels doesnt support over 2GB it really makes it difficult for me to demo to customers.

For the demo I need two virtual machines with one of them having 8GB ram.

Isn't there a workaround for this limit without disabling AHCI?

Ok the solution comes by Shade69: sorry for multiple posts.

"backup your MBR in .bin :

dd if=/dev/disk0 of=backup.bin bs=512 count=1

rename it "PhysicalMbr.hds"
and copy this file in your VM image "Windows 7.pvm/Name of your hard drive.hdd" [right click and select show contents to access the folders]

Then the first time you launch parallel with bootcamp it'll deactivate the bootcamp manager, repair it with in your native windows 7, the second time Parallel won't touch it.."
 
Still having same error

Thanks for the info. I am still getting the same error. I replaced to PhysicalMbr.hds with the backup of the physical SSD I made from a USB boot versiopn of Terminal. I dropped it in the Bootcamp VM (after backing up the one already in there). Then I used the WindowsSupport files from Bootcamp Assistant to "repair" from within the Bootcamp running Win 7 VM. I rebooted once under 2GB and then shut it down. Changed config to 4GB and then same thing I got the bootcfg corruption message again.

What did I do wrong?
