Windows 7 programs problems

I had Parallels 5 and just upgraded to 6 but my problem started with 5 and is doing the same thing with 6. A lot of the programs/applications I install dont work. When I try to run them, it gives me and error message and says the program has to close. This is a licenses copy of Windows 7 obtained through school and was installed on both my macs and it does the same thing on both. One is a macPro and the other is a macBook Pro, both less than a year old (macbook is brand new). Anyone have any ideas why this is happening and how I could possibly fix it? TIA
 
Are these programs Windows 7 compatible? I have used the wrong version of an Windows 7 app (32 bit vs 64 bit) and had this happen. I have also had some XP programs that worked, others that had to be configured for compatibility, and others that simply refused to work. I even have a Vista game that only works when I set Windows 7 to run it as an XP compatible program - go figure.
