Windows XP Activation in VM Mode

I have installed XP as virtual operating system on my iMac but cannot activate. I enter the activation key, and I get a message that it is not correct. Any ideas? Thank you.

Try to install an older Parallel version, install XP and upgrade your Parallels Version after complete installation of XP.

do you have the original packaging?
it sounds like a typo

or

I had this with the reinstallation of a used OEM version

there is a help button which takes you to a "contact microsoft" screen with local telephone numbers according to where you live

you have to quote an installation reference and get a new code over the phone
