Windows XP hangs during shutdown

When I restart or shutdown WinXP in Parallels Desktop it hangs. The screen shows "Windows is shutting down..." I have to quit and restart Parallels (which is worrisome, since WinXP updates and closes various files as it is shutting down).

This happened both before and after updating to Parallels 5160. It happened both before and after installing the Parallels Tools update. I am running a clean copy of WinXP SP2.

All I could find in Forums and Knowledgebase was a similar problem on Win98 in an older release of Parallels.

For what it's worth, today this suddenly started happening to me, too, although I am running a different setup from you. From what I gather from searching this forum and Google, it is not a Parallels problem.

My solution, which may not work for you, was to boot Windows in Safe Mode <http://wiki.ittoolbox.com/index.php/Start_Windows_XP_in_Safe_Mode_using_the_F8_key> then shut down. The next time I started up in Normal Mode, I was able to shut down with no problem.

I have same problem as jmm.
On my MacPro I have a disc with BootCamp and Windows XP. I have also a Parallels's VM(5160) which uses the Bootcamp partition. When I shutdown Windows from Bootcamp, the screen shows "Windows is shutting down..." during about 15 s and it's fine, but from Parallels that can require up to 2 minutes, and that becomes unusable in practice!
It's not a Windows problem because shutdown always work fine in Bootcamp.
Please, help me!
 
Hello,

The issue could be caused by ".sav" or ".mem" files.
In the Finder, browse to the virtual machine folder (the default path is: Documents-Parallels-Virtual Machine). Find and delete ".sav" and ".mem" files in the virtual machine folder. Reset the VM.

Thank for your answer, but I don't have such files! In the VM folder I found:
- the application ".pvs"
- a folder "Windows Applications"
- a folder "Windows Disks"

No ".sav" or ".mem" files. Another idea?

[edit] Ok, I found a ".mem" file, when the VM is running!
But no change after deleting the file.

Hello everybody,

As to Windows shutdown working fine in Bootcamp, it is quite natural. Bootcamp gives all Mac resources to Windows directly while Parallels emulates OS and shares the computer's RAM for Mac and Windows. So in Parallels you get two OS for one processor when in Bootcamp you have a single OS for one processor.
Anyway, Windows hanging during shutdown is not Parallels issue. You can find the full explanation if you type "windows is not shutting down" in google.

Thank for your answer, but...
- Before using my Bootcamp partition with the VM, I had a virtual disk and don't had shutdown problems!
- If there is a Windows problem like those found on the net, how explain shutdown works fine in Bootcamp and not in Parallels using the same Windows XP, same softwares...? Problems of drivers, Ram...?
- If there is a resources problem, how explain all is fine when launched in VM: there is no difference of use (I don't play games) beetween Bootcamp alone and Bootcamp in Parallels!

If there is no solution, that wants to say that one should not propose to use a Bootcamp partition with Parallels! The main advantage of using Parallels and Bootcamp is the speed of OS change, ... only if the shutdown process does not take 2 minutes and more.

I hope it's a Parallels issue and you find the solution!!

[edit] the main difference I see when using Bootcamp with Parallels is the unmount/mount process of the Bootcamp partition.

Well jeanjacques.aubry, unmount process of the Bootcamp partition can really take some time that's needed to finish the work correctly. In some exceptional cases it can take up to 2 minutes. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
One more thing for you to know: as indicated in the license agreement for Boot Camp Beta, the Boot Camp Beta program expires when Mac OS 10.5 Leopard becomes available publicly in October, 2007 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306583). Parallels will support Leopard and our programmers are working hard to make Parallels-Support interaction most smoothly running.
