Windows XP is shutting down - hanging . . .

On a PC you just switch it off

but Parallels 5584 just saves this positon and my VM hangs with e Microsoft Logo and blue shut down screen if I try to restart it

Ctrl Alt Delete does nothing either

(the Paparelels clip board threw an error message hanging on shut down )

data is in a folder on the Mac OS 10.4.11 Desktop

(typical path P:\Users\hughw36\Desktop\Brown-1Test_2008-03-03.ged )


so i took a clone
updated it with AVG free virus and Windows update

checked it with PC care and made two new clones

1) as a test
how do i mount the hanging image as a second hard disk?

2) can it be repaired?

meanwhile the clone seems run faster than the broken one

3) how do I rename a clone - without making a new clone?

Hello Hugh Watkins,

The hang up issue can be caused either by some application, holding Windows or some device. Please close all applications and all antivirus programs before shutdown.
Remove Floppy from the current virtual machine configuration by means of Configuration Editor.
Remove a USB Controller from the current virtual machine configuration. (Probably it is a USB controller malfunction).

You can mount the second hard disk to your VM through Configuration Editor -> Hard Disk section. A clone can be renamed in Options section, General tab.

I'm having a similar issue. Build 5584, Running Win XP SP2 in a BootCamp partition.

When I shutdown Windows everything closes and it does to the Blue screen as if it was about to switch off, but it never switched off no matter how long I wait. I have to force quit parallels. It boots up after this without error every time.

I have no other devices connected when this happens.

Any ideas what can be causing it and how to fix? This happens 100% of the time and is very annoying.
 
Hello FlatDog,

Could you let me see a screenshot of Windows Task Manager, Processes tab, just before you are going to shut down? Put a check at "Show processes from all users".

sorry to be so slow replying but my thread subscriptions are not working too well

It started to happen again on the clone I used to replace my hung VM

this time I cancelled the grey dialogue box (and the shut down) and let the machine run on

I unstalled, and after rebooting, reinstalled Parallels Tools which fixed this on WinXP sp2,
which again had thrown a grey box error report about the shared clipboard hanging on shut down.

I suspect a windows cache or registry problem

I often drag and drop more than 300 images from the Mac OS 10.4.11 file system into Flickr uploader 3.0.5
- which also hung once after reinstalling Parallels Tools

daily

so I un- and reinstalled the uploader utility too (which had begun to fail) and all is well

Now how can I recover the old VM ?
eg mount it as a second hard disk

today is Saturday - which is clone day - so I will run

and make two new clones (one to each La Cie 800 external disk) - and then delete the old pair

I must admit I do not take snapshots - should I ?

My IT department have disabled my ability to change any AV settings / stop services. And i really don't like the idea of doing it either.
