Wireless network on MacBook Pro & Parallels

I recently was able to get my wireless connection (Verizon V650) to work under Parallels desktop running Windows XP. This was done by removing the IOSerialFamily.Kext file from the Extensions folder. Now however, I can not get Mac OS to detect the wireless port outside of the Parallels enviornment! I even reinstalled the MacOS most current update which did return the IOSerialFamily.Kext file to the Extensions folder but it still does not work. Can anyone help me get the system to detect this port as it was originally?

did you try opening a terminal and loading the kernel extension by typing

sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext

does that report that it loaded it or that it was already loaded?

I just tried it and dot the following message:
can't add kernel extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext (not a bundle)

It also asks to run the kextload with a -t for diagnostic output.

How do I do that?

Maybe your IOSerialFamily.kext got corrupted somehow - maybe when you copied it away and back something happened to it. Typing exactly that command on my MBP here results in "kextload: extension /System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext is already loaded"

In the Finder, go to /System/Library/Extensions and select IOSerialFamily.kext, then do an Apple-I

I am running 10.4.7 and mine here comes up with:

11.8 MB on disk (11,736,080 bytes), created Feb 13th, 2006
Apple Computer, Inc 2005-01-12 IOKit Serial Port Family

If you do not see that then something is definitely messed up with that extension bundle in which case you should probably just copy that bundle from another machine if you have access to one or have someone send you a copy
 
You were correct. The file was only 552kb! I moved the original one (I saved it) back into the Extensions directory and performed the kextload. Now it is telling me it is "not authentic" and to check the ownership & permissions. I also got a system message that it was improperly installed and can not be used!

Any suggestions?

Try the following:

In the finder, go to /System/Library

Locate Extensions folder, select it

Apple-I

Go down to Ownership & Permissions

click on the little padlock next to Owner: system

(the Details should say Owner:system - Read & Write, Group: wheel - Read only, Others: Read only)

Click on Apply to enlosed items

Ok the confirmation

Hopefully this will cause the system to retake ownership of the file

(Hope this works, I am kind of making this up as I am going along)
 
I checked the permissions on the file and it was incorrect. I located one that had the "System" as owner and perfromed the kextload. It Worked! It now recognizes the V640.

Sharing your EVDO Connection - Mac OSX

Once you connect with your EVDO Card (Novatel V640 ExpressCard or Franklin CDU-550) on your Mac, Parallels wouldn't "see" the internet, so you couldn't access the internet under Parallels.
