    Hi everyone,

I have to update an iMac and its Parallels Desktop 7 installation to an up to date version. Parallels is used for a Win XP and a Win 7 virtual machine. In the last step I updated MacOS to El Capitan (10.11.16). When I boot the iMac a messsage pops up that Parallels is not installled correctly (before the update Parallels worked without problems). Probably that is because of the old Parallels version.
Of course I wanted to update Parallels to an up-to-date version to get both VMs executable again. After that it is planned to update the iMac to the most current MacOS version.
Now I am not sure which is the correct Parallels version for me.
In the app store I can only find Parallels Desktop Lite version 1.3.3 (version 13?). The App Store article says that users that use Parallels Desktop should not change to Parallels Desktop Lite.
The Parallels website says something about Parallels Desktop version 14. But this version is not available in the app store.
    So my questions are:
    - Can I purchase version 14 only via Prallels website?
    - Can I update from Parallels Desktop version 7 to 14?
    - Is there something else I am maybe missing about the update procdure?

    Regards

    Hi SebastianR1.
Can also be bought from an authorized reseller (e.g., BestBuy, Amazon etc.,).
Sorry, but this is not possible. Parallels Desktop can only be upgraded from any of the previous two versions.
Before updating the macOS, make a copy of the virtual machine file (it is a file with the extension '.pvm') and move the copy to an external hard drive with a Mac-compatible file system [e.g., exFAT, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) etc.,]. Always good to have a backup.

    Thank you for your Reply
Is there any chance that I install version 14 and import the files of the vms or do I have to upgrade from version 7 to 9, then to 11 and so on...
Backups were made, of course :)

Yes, install Parallels Desktop 14 and continue using your VM's. This process doesn't affect the VM's or the data contained therein.

Thank you so far for your answers.
I installed Desktop 14 and the VM's work properly after the update
