Same problem here
Kubuntu 7.0.4 (new install, kernel 2.6.20-15-generic), fresh install of parallels after completing instructions on this page:
http://forums.parallels.com/thread6035-2.html, specifically I had to use this version of Parallels to complete the installation successfully:
http://download.parallels.com/stuff/ubuntu_special/Parallels-2.2.2164-lin-en.deb
When I run parallels from the CLI, this is what I receive:
