shared networking is disabled

I've not been able to access the internet through XP and so I've just installed 1970 for the shared networking but the option is disabled making Bridged Ethernet and Host-only networking my only 2 options. I really just want the shared networking so I can be done with this. What do I need to do?

First, try rebooting your Mac. If it doesn't help please try either of the following:
1. Uninstall Parallels using Uninstaller from the dmg. Reboot your Mac. Install Parallels again. This will not touch your VMs, and you won't need to reinstall tools afterwards.
or
2. Open Mac System Preferences / Network. If a prompt about new en3 interface does not appear manually add configuration for it: select the bottom option from the "Show" dropdown then click "Add" and select en3. Leave all settings as defaults. Click "Apply". Then from OSX Terminal 'sudo killall -HUP pvsnatd'.
 
I tried #2 and was prompted about en3 and then did the sudo killall. I then rebooted the mac and started parallels and was able to select shared networking. While the network connection claimed to be working in XP I still could not hit any web sites. Do I need to configure my network in any which way on the XP side with shared networking?

No special configurarion is necessary in XP. It should be set to DHCP, no manual gateway/router or DNS settings should be present.
Can you plese do 'ipconfig /all' in windows and post results here?

Hmm.. Lets try this from your Mac Terminal:
sudo killall -9 pvsnatd
sudo /Library/StartupItems/Parallels/pvsnatd
tail /var/log/system.log

The last command should show some messages from pvsnatd[XXXX]. What are the messages?
 
I am also having trouble with shared networking in build 1970. When I reboot a VM, the networking works for a few minutes, and then stops working. I usually keep two VMs up at once (one for testing in IE6, and one for IE7, both running XP). I have tried completely removing and reinstalling the Parallels Tools from both VM images. It appears that the VMs stop being able to acquire IPs via DHCP ("unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.")

I attempted killing and restarting pvsnatd, and my system.log reported:

After restarting pvsnatd, my VM image was still not able to get online. I restarted Windows and it began working again. I expect it will stop working in a few minutes.

Hi There,

I too have no internet in either of my XP or Linux VM's since upgrading to build 1970. I have the Parallels Host Connection in my OS X network Prefs and XP says that it is connected.

I also performed an erase and install of OS 10.4.8 and Parallels build 1970.

MacBook, 2GB ram (500MB allocated to Parallels).

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry for not getting back to you. Are you sure you don't have Mac Internet Sharing turned on for en3? Even if it's not active try starting and stopping it in case the settings stuck in wrong state. Then try repairing your Windows connection via Repair button on the Spport tab on Connection Properties window.

Please provide some more info about your setup. How's you VM network configured in Parallels?
 
Hi There Serv,

I haven't changed any of the settings so they are just set to the defaults which are:
- Device Status is enabled and set to connect at startup
- Emulation is set to "Bridged Ethernet" - Default Adapter
- Advanced Settings is set to "Realtek 8029(AS)" & Mac Address is set to "006CA6C95AFC"

More than happy to provide other info - just not sure what...

I tried repairing the connection in my XP VM but Windows comes back with:
"Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address"

I'm not sure. Where can I find this setting? Is this under the Network/en3 setup or under Prefs/Sharing?

When I go to the support tab it says, "Windows did not detect problems with this connection" but if I hit the repair button anyway it tells me that it is unable to renew the IP address.

Does this make sense?

I found the Internet Sharing and turned it on then back off but the repair is still unable to renew the IP address.

The General tab of Windows connection properties window has Sent/Received counts. What numbers are there? If Received is non-zero, please do 'netstat -s' and post output here.

As I understand your XP doesn't work in bridged mode either. Actually I'm running out of ideas. I'm sorry but the last resort is to reinstall XP. Create a new VM, install Windows and Parallels tools.
